Sifan Hassan

This is Sifan

Hey, my name is Sifan! I was born in Ethiopia but I moved as a refugee to the Netherlands as a kid and I built my whole life and athletics career there. Somewhere along the way, I earned a few Olympic and world medals. Still not sure how that happened, but I'm glad I always followed my instinct!

I don’t really like choosing just one thing

People always want you to choose. One distance. One plan. One clear story. But I’ve never really felt comfortable with that. I love that running gives people different worlds and opportunities to step into. The speed of the 1500m. The rhythm of the 5000m.

The pain of the 10,000m. The mystery of the marathon. That's all just so beautiful. Not everything has to be predictable. Sometimes, that means things get messy. Sometimes dramatic. But that’s when it gets interesting.

some beautiful memories

Those are among the favorite moments in my career. They were not always perfect, but that gives stories to tell.

-I don’t need to be perfect to believe in it

People sometimes expect athletes to always sound confident, strong and completely in control. But I’m not really  like that. I think. I overthink. I feel things deeply. Sometimes I’m scared before I  start something big. But fear does not always mean stop.

Sometimes it just means you’re close to  something important. I believe in staying open. In being honest. In continuing anyway. In hard work, but also in  instinct. In resilience. In trusting that you  can step into something unknown and still find your way through it.

you can keep becoming

Running is a big part of my life, but it’s not the only thing that matters to me. My story started in Ethiopia and continued in the Netherlands, and that journey will always be part of who I am. It shaped how I look at life, at people, and at what it means to keep moving forward.

If people see something in me beyond sport, I hope it’s this: that you don’t have to fit neatly into one box to be great. You can be emotional and strong. Playful and focused. Uncertain and brave at the same time.
